Research, Development and Innovation

RD&I at the Welsh Blood Service

The Welsh Blood Service plays a vital role in giving thousands of people across Wales a lifeline in their time of greatest need.

But it’s not all about blood. We are also at the heart of cutting-edge research, covering a broad range of healthcare topics including supporting crucial trials during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Our Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) team supports researchers to conduct high quality and ethical research.

Alongside our own independent research, we also work with academics, partners and other organisations to help improve the entire blood supply chain and advance care, for everybody, across the world.

RD&I Themes

Our RD&I projects have four main themes:

RD&I Strategy

We asked our colleagues and stakeholders about the future of our research ambitions back in 2016.

Feedback stated high-quality research and development work should be part of our day-to-day activity.

Our research and development strategy is built on our wish to work in partnership with researchers and achieving the best quality, outcome, and reach.

It sets out how we will help to advance care for donors, transfusion, and transplantation patients through our own and others’ projects.
